Abstract

Electrolysis is a promising approach for converting carbon dioxide into chemicals and fuels. The most active CO2 reduction electrocatalysts have long been assumed to be solid silver, gold, and copper, but emerging data show that molecular catalysts can operate at performance levels comparable to solid-state catalysts. This Perspective highlights recent advances in molecular electrocatalysts for CO2RR and discusses opportunities for implementing molecular catalysts into practical CO2 electrolyzers.
